Since 1909 the cemetery has not only fulfilled its main purpose as a burial ground, but with its tree lined paths and woodlands, miles of hedgerows and vast array of bird species and wildlife, it has provided a most natural setting for the bereaved to visit their beloved. It is considered to be of sufficient historic importance and is placed on the Register of Parks and Gardens. The 2nd crematorium opened in the city, Springwood, is located adjacent to Allerton Cemetery.
